TODAY’S COFFEES

Frinj Coffee operates on a tight fringe of price, quality and domestic impact

Santa Barbara County based Frinj Coffee is a plantation that grows specialty coffees for what they hope will be a thriving domestic market. Geisha, Catuai and Red Catuai varietals are husbanded there after years of planting and maturing of the trees in the mountains between Carpinteria to Temecula and points south. The coffees are highly regarded by some trade observers and prices for the coffees match the trade regard. A pound of unroasted coffee sells for $80; Frinj offers roasted beans at $50 per 5 ounces; effectively $10 per ounce or $160 per pound. A safe bet of fifty cups per pound would cost the consumer $3.20/cup; this without figuring any other costs per cup. This is one indicator of new and vastly different pricing structures for scarce commodities in the coming times of tariff, and coming food shortages that will impact the world of coffee and the lives of consumers.
