NOTE: American tariffs will dramatically affect the coffee trade, both in limiting American markets for higher priced coffees and perhaps cutting off some countries from export entirely. Brazil is facing a 50 percent tariff from the US, meaning it may find markets elsewhere; other coffee growing nations are moving to expand markets to both cover American losses and broaden their appeal. Two things are clear: The American consumer will pay much more for every kind of coffee in the future, and short term coffee market destabilization will eventually broaden consumption of coffees by the rest of the world, meaning the American market will lose primacy among the trade. Short term: bet on Mexico for your beans; at present, that nation’s coffees have yet to be affected by American tariffs and may be spared the worst of rates. ESPRESSO will be watching, and let you know how things change.
